Understanding The Causes Of Your Neck Pain
The neck is very vulnerable and gets injured or sprained easily due to accidents or poor posture. Modern lifestyle such as excessive usage of mobile phones and computers has also led to early degeneration of our neck.
Degeneration of the neck can cause persistent pain in the neck and shoulder, hand and fingers numbness, headache, migraine, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), blurred vision and jaw pain, etc.
Severe neck pain may need surgical intervention but carries its risk as it may lead to the possibility of paralysis. Let’s check out why is it important to keep our necks healthy and pain-free.
The back of your neck consists of the cervical spine, the muscles and ligaments that surround and support it.
The centre of this column of vertebrae and discs is the spinal canal, which contains the spinal cord.
The spinal cord is made up of nervous tissue that carries messages to and from your brain. Nerves from the spinal cord come out from between the vertebrae in the neck to transfer messages to your neck and arms.
Neck Pain Caused By Cervical Spondylosis
Neck pain is very common among many people and gets worse when age catches up. It is a medical condition called Cervical Spondylosis.
Cervical Spondylosis describes a condition in which the cervical disc starts to degenerate, compress, and narrow the space needed by the spinal cord and the nerve roots that pass through the spine to the rest of your body.
Cervical Spondylosis causes no symptoms in most people, but when it does, it will present nasty pain and stiffness in your neck, which restricts the movement of your head lifting up and down, or turning from left to the right.
It can cause wear and tear of your neck spinal discs due to the excessive usage of mobile phones or computers, or it can be due to ageing, injury, or an accident.
Cervical Spondylosis causes your cervical discs to dehydrate and shrink resulting in signs of osteoarthritis developing in the neck. This will cause the spinal disc to have bony projections along the edges of the bones called bone spurs.
Neck Pain Caused By Bone Spurs
The bone spurs will compress on the nerve of the cervical spine causing shoulder pain and hand numbness radiating down to the elbow, wrist, and fingers.
This condition is called Cervical Radiculopathy causing persistent pain in the neck and shoulder, hand weaknesses, or the possibility of a trigger finger or thumb.
When you have Cervical Radiculopathy, you may also notice a loss of strength in your hands when you try to pick up a pen to write. You may also have difficulty combing your hair or wearing your shirt.
Severe stages of Cervical Radiculopathy may cause you to have nerve damage or develop a frozen shoulder that you cannot even lift up your arm over your head.
Neck Pain Caused By Whiplash
Neck pain can also be caused by accidents that jerk the neck violently and over-stretch the soft tissues beyond their limits known as whiplash.
Whiplash is a quick and sudden action that compresses your neck vertebrae and strains the neck muscles as it pushes your head forward, thus impinging on your nerves.
Whiplash can happen in a car accident or when someone or an object hit you hard on the head. It causes neck and shoulder pain, and numbness thus sending a radiating and tingling painful sensation down towards your arms and fingers.
Other Causes Of Neck Pain
Bad posture during your daily activities can also contribute to your neck pain. For example, excessive usage of your mobile phone or computer, sleeping on your stomach and holding the phone with your neck.
Emotional stress can also cause us to clench our neck muscles and tensing them up without you realizing it. This can cause neck pain, muscle spasm and strain to your shoulders and upper back.
Neck pain may radiate down to the shoulder or between the shoulder blades, or it may radiate out into the arm, elbow and fingers. This is known as irritation of the Brachial Plexus (the Brachial Plexus is a network of nerves that goes to the arm from the spinal cord in the neck).
Acute pain can also force the head to turn to one side, causing a one-sided or double-sided head pain. The pain tends to come and go with occasional flare-ups. You may have a pain attack after unaccustomed use of your neck or if you sprain a neck muscle or ligament.
What Kind Of Neck Pain Are You Having?
More than 85% of people, be it young or old are suffering from chronic neck pain due to modern lifestyles and bad postural habits.
Here is the checklist of conditions that may be causing you to have neck pain:
Forward head posture results in a hunch back that causes neck pain and a limited range of motion. The neck becomes immobile and inflexible.
Our spinal discs begin to dry and shrink when we age which causes more bone-on-bone contact between the spinal vertebrae which leads to degeneration.
Discs act as cushions between the vertebrae of your spine and losses their optimum protection when ageing start from the 40s and above.
Age also affects the exterior of your spinal disks. Cracks often appear, leading to bulging (herniated) disks — which sometimes can press on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
It refers to the narrowing of the spaces of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine.
As we age, degeneration of the vertebrate and discs in the neck sets in. Bones from the neck form bony outgrowth called osteophytes known as bone spurs.
The spine produces an extra amount of bone in a misguided effort to strengthen the spine and pinch the spinal cord and nerve roots. These bone spurs irritate nearby muscles, ligaments and nerves, causing neck pain.
Ligaments are cords of tissue that connect bone to bone. Spinal ligaments can stiffen with age, making your neck less flexible.
Mental & Physical Stress
During stress, our body will go into a fight or flight mode causing long term muscle tension, tightness, stiffness and persistent pain.
Having tumours or cancer that cause unresolved neck pain.
Symptoms of Neck Pain
If your spinal cord or nerve roots become pinched, you might develop the following symptoms on top of your neck pain:
Tingling sensation radiating down from the shoulder, chest, tricep, bicep, elbow, wrist and fingers
Weakness of your arm, loss of strength, feeling achy and pain
Developing a frozen shoulder, resulting in difficulty lifting up your arm
Tingling, numbness and weakness sensation that can be felt in your legs or feet
Difficulty walking and lack of coordination
Loss of bladder or bowel control due to nerve damage resulting from compression
Cervical Spondylosis can cause permanent damage to your spinal cord or nerve roots. Seeking treatment early is the key to protecting your cervical spine from further damage!
