Causes Of Back Pain
Back pain is prevalent among white-collar workers in Singapore. In fact, about 80% of Singaporeans suffered from lower back pain at some point in their lives.
Back pain can be caused by prolonged sitting with poor posture that will cause your pelvic area to misalign. As a result, it tightens and strains your lower back muscles and put lots of undue stress on the lumbar spinal discs.
Prolonged sitting also weakens your core muscles which can lead to lower back pain as it cannot support your lumbar spine well. Prolonged sitting can compress your lumbar disc. As a result, this action may lead to slipped discs causing nerve root compression causing pain and numbness.
Furthermore, back problems can also be triggered by carrying heavy things while having weak core muscles and tight muscles. Similarly, back pain can be caused by accidents, obesity, pregnancy, or sports injuries.

Again, this is due to the muscles becoming tired easily as their ligaments are stretching beyond the comfortable range. Of course, back pain is made worse when the combined weight of the mother and foetus increases over time.
Do you have the following back pain symptoms such as:
- Lower back muscle spasm that creates difficulty in sitting for a longer period of time?
- Muscle strain in your lower back resulting in the inability to walk a longer distance?
- Unable to bend your body due to severe lower back pain that causes inflexibility and tightness?
- Buttock numbness due to nerve compression from the lumbar spine as a result of a slipped disc?
- Buttock numbness caused by the formation of bone spurs due to lower back degeneration?
- Leg numbness and loss of lower leg sensation due to nerve compression caused by a slipped disc?
- Scoliosis that causes a sideways curvature of your spine that is most often diagnosed in adolescents?
According to The Back Society Singapore, 1 in 5 Singaporean adults suffer from back and neck pain.
Knee pain can also give rise to back pain. This is because an uneven walking pattern can misaligns the lower back due to compensation when you are walking.
Let’s take a further look at what kind of back pain you are having in the next section.
Back Pain Caused By Slipped Disc

A sudden slipped disc in the lower back (lumbar spine) is a traumatizing experience as it could result in temporary paralysis of both your legs and excruciating shooting pain down your legs (sciatica). For instance, if you have slipped disc, numbness or even a burning sensation in the legs can be felt.
Slipped disc is a degenerative disc disease that can cause you to be immobile and wheelchair-bound if it becomes serious.
Each spinal disc has two components. It consists of a tough outer ring called the ‘annulus fibrosus’ which protects the soft, gel-like material inside the center of the disc called the ‘nucleus pulposus’.
Poor posture, weakness of lower back and core muscles, or injury can cause the inner portion of the disc to protrude through the outer ring resulting in a slipped, herniated, or prolapsed disc.
What Are The Symptoms of a Slipped Disc?
If the slipped disc compresses one of your spinal nerves, you may also experience severe pain and numbness along the affected nerve which is often radiating down the outer or inner part of your thigh to the base of your foot; that’s in the worst-case scenario.
The symptoms can also be radiating down your arm to the fingers causing pain and weakness if the slipped disc occurred in the cervical spine which is your neck.
If you have slipped disc, it means that the disc which sits in between each spinal vertebra has been damaged. Slipped disc can occur in any part of the spine but it is most common in the lumbar disc or cervical disc. This can cause you to lose control of your legs or arms.
Normally, patients who suffer from slipped disc also have lumbar degeneration that causes ‘bone spur’.
Bone spurs are known as osteophytes which are bony lumps that grow on the spine or around the joints.
Osteophytes can grow on the neck, shoulder, knee, lower back, fingers, big toe, foot, or heel. The lower back, legs, feet, and buttock will feel the pain and numbness as the bone spur can impinge on the surrounding nerves.
If you suffered from a slipped disc, is it necessary to go for surgery? The answer is no! Slipped disc treatment can be done without surgery in Singapore.
Back Pain Caused By Sciatica

Your back pain can be caused by sciatica. Sciatica is the pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve that runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs, ending just below the knee.
Sciatica is a symptom that consists of leg pain, which might feel like a bad leg cramp. It can be an excruciating, shooting pain down from your buttock to your leg as if there is an electric current.
Normally, a slipped disc or herniated disc is the most common cause of sciatica. Sciatica caused by a slipped disc will result in nerve root compression in the spinal cord area.
Sciatica may cause burning and tingling sensations at the side of the leg and sometimes at the toes. It can be a feeling of weakness or numbness in the buttock and leg too.
This can make standing or sitting nearly impossible and the pain might be worse when you sit, sneeze, or cough.
Sciatica can affect only one side or both sides of your legs and buttock.
Back Pain Caused By Scoliosis

Back pain can be caused by scoliosis. Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that is most often discovered in a growing child from age 11 and above.
Scoliosis can cause neck and back pain as well as knee pain due to misalignment of the spine, pelvis, and legs. It can cause pain in children and not just adults.
Severe scoliosis may reduce the amount of space within the chest causing breathing difficulty as the lungs have less space to function properly.
Despite the fact that severe scoliosis causes the spine to curve so much, it does not always require major surgery. On the contrary, back surgery may involve the possibility of side effects and risks.
